The National Weather Service has posted a Flood Advisory for Avalon and surrounding communities until 10pm on Saturday, June 27th.  A line of thunderstorms with heavy rain is approaching our region and should be arriving in Avalon before sunset.  Please be advised that heavy rain is possible, and streets and intersections may be flooded for a brief period of time.  Exercise caution while driving.  If you see lightning, seek shelter immediately.  If you have any emergency, please dial 911.

The Avalon Police Department closed a portion of Ocean Drive leading to the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge late Saturday afternoon due to waves coming into the roadway.  The roadway to the bridge will be opened when wave action subsides.

* until 1000 PM EDT

* at 607 PM EDT… Doppler radar indicated heavy rain across portions
of the advised area. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen
with another inch possible this evening. Minor flooding can be
anticipated where the heaviest rains occur. The back bays are also
approaching high tide. These tides are running higher than normal
due to the southeast winds and could further restrict the rainfall
from draining.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
