The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Watch for Saturday evening through Saturday night, May 7th.  A Mother’s Day weekend that will bring significant rainfall, strong winds, and the potential for moderate tidal flooding for Avalon.

The storm will begin with light rain early Friday afternoon, with heavier rain and stronger winds moving into our region Friday night through Saturday night.  The current forecast calls for wind gusts approaching 45mph.  Minor tidal flooding is anticipated during high tide Saturday afternoon and late Saturday night, and again Sunday afternoon.  Moderate tidal flooding is possible.

High tide will occur at the Townsend’s Inlet Bridge Saturday at 1:34pm, and again Sunday at 1:37am and at 2:35pm.  Tidal flooding is possible in flood prone areas including portions of Ocean Drive and the Dune Drive business district.  Do not drive on any flooded street as this puts you and your vehicle at risk.  If you live in an area of Avalon that typically receives tidal flooding, please reference our flood risk map and consider moving your vehicle to higher ground.  Contractors are required to secure their job sites on Friday.  Bring objects indoors that may be prone to strong winds including trash cans and patio furniture.

Avalon will continue to monitor this storm with our partners at the Cape May County Department of Emergency Management and provide updates when necessary.  If you have any emergency, dial 911.
