Hurricane Sandy has made landfall in the Borough of Avalon.  Sandy officially made landfall in Avalon shortly after 4:00pm on Monday, October 29th and the eye of the storm was over the Borough at 5:15pm.  Avalon will experience more significant tidal flooding at time of high tide this evening, and possibly Tuesday morning.  Windy conditions with rain tapering off will dominate the forecast for the next 12 hours with gradual clearing during the day on Tuesday.

A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for Avalon.  No motor vehicle traffic is permitted during the evening hours in Avalon on Monday.

This is very important for people who have evacuated Avalon:  Just because the weather will be clearing Avalon on Tuesday does not mean entry will be permitted right away.  Re-entry into Avalon will only be permitted and authorized by the Avalon Office of Emergency Management under Mayor Martin Pagliughi.  Avalon has experienced some limited private property damage, road damage, beach erosion, and power outages during this storm.  Only when the Avalon OEM authorizes re-entry will it be permitted.  Do not begin a trip back to Avalon assuming that because the weather is clearing on Tuesday re-entry will be immediately possible.  The Borough needs to clear debris from streets, check the sewer system, search every block for danger or downed wires, and inspect Borough infrastructure.

Avalon will notify residents about potential re-entry three ways:  On www.avalonemergency.org, on the official Facebook page for the Borough of Avalon, and via a Global Connect 9-1-1 telephone call.
